This superb quality English antique armchair is made from the best quality mahogany. In the style of George 11 it has a gracefully shaped back panel with a central inlaid design of a lions face mask detailed in pen work. (Pen work is a combination of engraving and drawing in indian ink).
During the late Victorian and Edwardian periods there was a revival of furniture designs from the previous centuries. This inlaid cartouche owes its inspiration to the Renaissance of the 16th Century and is surrounded by a line inlay.
The arms are in a design known as 'shepherds crook' with boldly carved and curved shapes similar to the top of a shepherds crook.
The circular seat has has been recovered with a traditionally designed gold brocade fabric in a floral and pomegranate design.
The chair has well carved cabriole legs with pad feet to the front and the rear.
Chairs of this style and quality are rare to fine these days and especially in such good condition. This would make a very stylish hall chair or desk chair and be a lovely addition to any room.
Notes:
In particular designs referred to as 'Old English' harking back to a romantic age of chivalry. Designers such as William Morris and his company 'Morris & Co.' Liberty, E. W. Goodwin, William Burgess and 'Liberty' all utilized these representational styles.
