A very handsome antique oak longcase or 'Grandfather'
clock, with excellent proportions typical of 18th Century design. Such
clocks are also known as tall case clocks or brass faced clocks.
This antique clock is in excellent working order and has an 8 day plated
movement with 4 turned pillars striking the hours on a bell.
The 12 inch square brass dial has a brass chapter ring
with Roman numerals for the hours on the inner ring and arabic numerals
outer ring indicating the minutes. The makers name, John Wood, engraved
on the face in copperplate script.
It has the original ornate black steel hands and subsidiary
dial for seconds and inset date display. The corner spandrels are of
swags and flower design.
The oak case has a caddy top to the hood and turned columns. The case
has a long door with its original hinges and sits on a box base. The
base has had some restoration work and the plinth has been replaced
at some time in the past.
An old depository label inside gives details of a previous
owner as: Reverend Wadeson, Bramham Vicarage, Boston Spa, (Lincolnshire).
Dated: October 19/25 we think this is probably 1925.
