This large English Regency period, antique partners desk is in excellent condition made of top quality solid mahogany timbers
and sympathetically restored.
Its unusual construction, the top overhangs the pedestals, is
a feature associated with desks designed by the English Furniture Designer Thomas Chippendale.
This style of English antique desk was constructed between 1770 and 1800. This desk however
is circa 1810/1820. It has the original ebony knobs associated
with the Regency period in deference to the death of Nelson in 1805. From this time and
up to 1830 ebony was used for handles and inlay in good quality
English furniture as a mark of respect to this National hero.
This very handsome English antique desk has a black hide writing surface with blind and gilt
tooling surrounded by a two inch cross-band of well figured mahogany
with a deep chamfered edge.
Made in three sections, the top is fitted with three frieze
drawers to either side of the width.
The pedestals are each fitted with three drawers to the front
and cupboards to the reverse.
They stand on original plinth bases with hidden castors.
The side panels and the cupboard doors have particularly well
figured timbers.
All drawers are have hand cut dovetails, original brass locks
(apart from one) brass escutcheons (one replacement) and ebony
knobs.
Condition:
This is a fine desk in excellent condition not overly restored.
It has a few knocks and bumps commensurate with its age.
This large antique partners desk with beautiful well figured
mahogany timbers would make a stunning focus for any office or
library.
