A very unusual and attractive Liberty
pedestal desk in the Old English style which is constructed from the
best quality English oak. In restoring the desk we have revived the
polish to bring it back to it's original condition.
It has the original ivorine label beneath the left hand pedestal 'Liberty
& Co, Regent St. London' which confirms its authenticity

The Old English Style was popular from
the 1880 - 1920 when vernacular English furniture had a massive rise
in desirability. The style of paneling used on this desk is similar
to those you will see in the Liberty's Showroom in London today.
The top is made of well figured oak
with golden medullary rays. The light flecking is obtained when the
oak is quarter cut .
Below this are three drawers with hand
cut dovetails, oak linings, drawer divisions, brass locks and original
brass acorn handles.
The drawer fronts and sides of the top
are decorated with an interlocking medallion design. The pedestals have
carved door panels with a central diamond or lozenge shape with a rose
center and a leaf motif on the corners. The left hand pedestal door
encloses three drawers and the right has two sliding shelves. There
is a decorative castellated arch between the two pedestals over the
kneehole with a rose design on each side.
The pedestals are made in the traditional
manner with pegged construction and stand on bun feet. The desk as a
whole is made in four sections for ease of transportation and installation.
