This well proportioned good quality antique partners writing table was originally retailed by W. Priest. The retailers stamp mark can be found in two of the drawers 'W Priest 17 & 24 Water Street, Blackfriars (London England).
It appears that the table has been sold twice by
Priests as the paper label indicates another address for the company at 1 & 2 Water Street, Blackfriars (London England).
The table is in the William 1V style with a replacement black hide writing surface with gilt and blind tooling. This is surrounded by a 3" band of well figured mahogany with a 'Thumb Moulded' edge and rounded corners.
The
frieze is fitted with two drawers to either side of the length with dovetail joints and mahogany linings. The drawers have brass locks ogee mouldings to the edges and well turned wood pull knobs.
is made from beautifully figured mahogany timbers. The top has a new black hide writing surface with gilt and blind tooling surrounded by a 'bulls' nose edge and rounded corners.
The
table stands on four well turned octagonal legs with the original ceramic and brass castors.
This partners writing table is a very good example of its type with a lovely deep colour to the wood and a beautiful sheen. It has benefitted from having the polish revived and the expert fitting of a new writing hide. It is in excellent restored condition.
This attractive antique writing table would be a handsome piece for any office, library or study with an antique chair to complete the look.
